They are different types of compressors on the market, High Pressure, Low pressure, Breathing Air, Oil Free are the most common you will find in industry. In your home it will be the refrigeration type units this also includes the hvac systems.

The main way of generating the air is either by screw, piston or vane compression. Compressors require to be cooled as the air generated is high temp. The main cooling of the compressor is either air cooled or water cooled. In the water type this is either fresh or sea water cooling.
